Modus is an open-source, serverless framework designed for building agentic systems and AI applications using WebAssembly. It supports programming in Go and AssemblyScript, enabling developers to write functions that are compiled, optimized, and executed in a sandboxed environment. The framework simplifies the integration of AI models, context, and data, allowing for the creation of scalable, production-ready AI-enabled endpoints with sub-second response times. Modus extracts metadata from functions, compiles code with host environment optimizations, caches compiled modules for fast retrieval, and generates API schemas to activate endpoints. It securely manages data and AI model queries without exposing credentials, ensuring safe execution. The framework is optimized for speed and simplicity, making it suitable for general-purpose applications that incorporate models, agents, and tools as first-class components. Modus supports multiple programming languages through WebAssembly, currently including Go and AssemblyScript, with plans to add more languages in the future. Users can run Modus apps on their own hardware or any hosting platform, with additional deployment and infrastructure support available through Hypermode, the company behind Modus. Hypermode offers tools for observability, debugging, and function hosting, facilitating easy construction and deployment of AI agents and applications. The project is actively maintained and welcomes external contributions. It is built on several open-source components such as Wazero for WebAssembly execution, Wundergraph's GraphQL Go Tools for API processing, AssemblyScript for WebAssembly development, and TinyGo for Go SDK support. Modus is licensed under the Apache License 2.0 and aims to provide a robust, scalable, and developer-friendly environment for building AI-powered applications.
