Magentic-UI is a research prototype developed by Microsoft that offers a human-centered interface powered by a multi-agent system designed to automate and assist with web tasks while keeping the user in control. It is particularly useful for complex web interactions such as filling out forms, customizing orders, navigating deep or non-indexed websites, and combining web navigation with code execution. The system is built on a modular architecture with specialized agents including an Orchestrator, WebSurfer, Coder, FileSurfer, and a UserProxy agent that represents the user. The Orchestrator, powered by a large language model, manages task planning and delegation, while WebSurfer controls a web browser to perform actions like clicking, typing, and scrolling. The Coder agent executes Python and shell commands in a Docker container, and FileSurfer handles file location, conversion, and analysis. The user interface consists of two main panels: a session navigator for managing multiple tasks and a session display where users can input queries, attach images, and interact with the agents. The interface supports co-planning, allowing users to collaboratively create and approve step-by-step plans, and co-tasking, enabling users to interrupt and guide task execution. Sensitive actions require explicit user approval through action guards, ensuring safety and transparency. The system also supports plan learning and retrieval, allowing it to improve over time by saving and reusing successful task plans. Multiple tasks can be run in parallel with clear status indicators. Magentic-UI requires Docker and optionally supports integration with Azure models and Ollama. It is designed as a platform for studying human-agent interaction and experimenting with web agents, emphasizing transparency, control, and collaboration between humans and AI agents. The project includes detailed installation instructions, troubleshooting guides, and a demo video to help users get started.
