Scouter is an open source Application Performance Management (APM) tool designed to monitor and manage the performance of software applications and system resources. It provides comprehensive monitoring capabilities for various targets including Java web applications running on servers like Tomcat, JBoss, and Resin, standalone Java applications, and host systems such as Linux, Windows, and Unix. Since version 2.0.0, Scouter also supports monitoring of popular services and infrastructure components like Redis, Nginx, Apache HTTPD, HAProxy, Kafka, MySQL, MongoDB, RabbitMQ, Elasticsearch, Kubernetes, and Mesos through Telegraf integration. Additionally, from version 2.5.0, it supports Zipkin instrumentations for distributed tracing across multiple programming languages including C#, Go, Python, JavaScript, and PHP, visualized in XLog scatter charts. Scouter helps users understand the relationship between application services and system resources by providing detailed metrics about users, services, and resources. It tracks active users, recent users, and daily visitors, as well as service metrics such as active services, transactions per second (TPS), response times, and application profiles including method, SQL, and external call profiles. Resource metrics include CPU, memory, network usage, heap usage, and connection pool statistics. The project consists of several modules: Agents that collect performance data (Java Agent for JVM and web servers, Host Agent for OS-level metrics, and an upcoming MariaDB Agent), a Server (Collector) that stores and streams data to clients, a Client (Viewer) application for visualizing data, and a Web API for accessing performance metrics programmatically. The Weaver module allows direct control of Scouter's XLog and profiles at the Java code level. Scouter supports various plugins for alerting via email, Telegram, Slack, Line, DingTalk, and Microsoft Teams, as well as data export to InfluxDB. Third-party UIs and agents extend its functionality further. The project is actively maintained with documentation, live demos, and community support through Facebook and Google Groups. It is suitable for developers and system administrators seeking an open-source alternative to commercial APM solutions like New Relic and AppDynamics.
