llm-for-zotero is a TypeScript plugin for Zotero 7, 8 and 9 that embeds a large language model assistant into the reference manager and its PDF reader. It is installed from a released xpi file and configured with a provider, base URL, key and model name, with a test-connection button; supported provider protocols include the OpenAI responses API, OpenAI chat compatibility, Anthropic messages and native Gemini, so hosted APIs and local OpenAI-compatible servers both work. Alternative backends avoid API keys entirely: a ChatGPT WebChat sync path, a Codex App Server path that runs the local codex app-server runtime and is described as the recommended route for ChatGPT Plus subscribers, and an experimental Claude Code mode that runs through a companion local bridge as a separate conversation system without native Zotero API operations. In use, the assistant chats about the open paper, selected text, figures, screenshots and uploaded documents; the first message loads the paper as context and follow-ups use focused retrieval from it. Answers carry citations that jump back to the source passage, and citation labels stay conservative until page locations are verified. Multiple open papers can be compared and external files added as context. An Agent Mode, marked beta, extends this to library-wide reading, searching, tagging, metadata editing, importing, note editing and organisation, with a cache-aware design that preserves paper context, prior read evidence and coverage state across long research turns and compacts old transcript history when the context window fills. Eight built-in skills customise how Agent Mode handles research workflows, and a portal allows creating more. Output can be saved as Zotero notes or as Markdown files in local folders such as Obsidian or Logseq, and MinerU parsing improves extraction of tables, equations and figures.
