DBHub is a minimal and token-efficient database Model Context Protocol (MCP) server designed to provide a unified interface for connecting to and exploring multiple types of databases including PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, and SQLite. It acts as a lightweight gateway that supports MCP-compatible clients such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, and others, enabling them to interact with various databases through a single MCP server interface. The project emphasizes token efficiency by implementing just two general MCP tools: execute_sql and search_objects. These tools minimize the usage of context windows while allowing users to execute SQL queries with transaction support and safety controls, and to search and explore database schemas, tables, columns, indexes, and procedures with progressive disclosure. Additionally, DBHub supports custom tools that allow users to define reusable, parameterized SQL operations via configuration files. DBHub is designed with security and production readiness in mind. It offers read-only mode, SSH tunneling, and SSL/TLS encryption to ensure secure access to databases. It also supports multiple simultaneous database connections configured through TOML files, making it suitable for managing production, staging, and development environments from a single instance. Features like row limiting, lock timeout control, and connection pooling further enhance its robustness for production use. Installation and usage are straightforward, with options to run DBHub via Docker, NPM, or in demo mode. The project provides comprehensive documentation for installation, multi-database setup, command-line options, development, testing, and debugging. The open-source nature of DBHub is supported by a community of contributors, and its development is backed by Bytebase, a database DevSecOps platform. Overall, DBHub serves as a versatile, secure, and efficient MCP server solution for database management and exploration across multiple database systems, catering to developers and database administrators who require a streamlined and unified interface for their database operations.
