mcp-searxng is a Model Context Protocol server that exposes a SearXNG metasearch instance to MCP clients, giving assistants such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Cline and OpenCode web search without routing queries through a commercial search API. It is configured by pointing the SEARXNG_URL environment variable at an operator-controlled or otherwise trusted instance, and it runs through npx, a published npm package or a Docker image. The search tool covers general, news and article queries with pagination, time-range, language and safe-search filters, a minimum relevance score for filtering results, and a per-call choice between formatted text and raw JSON output. Several interchangeable replicas can be listed in one variable: by default searches fail over through them in order, and an optional fan-out mode queries every healthy replica in parallel and merges the results. Text results surface SearXNG answers, corrections, suggestions and infoboxes ahead of the result list, and separate tools provide query autocomplete from the autocompleter endpoint and capability discovery of the instance categories, engines, defaults, locales and plugins. A second major tool reads URL content, converting responses to Markdown with content-type awareness, bounded PDF text extraction, pagination, section filtering, paragraph ranges and heading extraction. For pages behind challenge pages it can optionally acquire a browser session from FlareSolverr or Byparr and replay the returned user agent and scoped cookies. Both search results and fetched content are cached in memory with configurable TTL and least-frequently-used eviction. Security features include SSRF protection that blocks private and internal addresses and redirects, and an optional hardened streamable HTTP transport with rate limiting for serverless or scaled deployments. The project is MIT licensed, written in TypeScript and listed in the GitHub MCP Registry.
